Most home soap makers who make real soap using the lye process, use the cold process, this technique is so called because aside from warming the oils slightly to melt any that are solid at room temperature, there is no need to use any further heat at all, however because the formation of soap relies on a chemical reaction called saponification, the cold process has a major drawback, once the soap has been removed from the mold after having set - normally overnight, the soap must be lefft to cure for another 4 - 6 weeks before it is ready to use.
